A 12-year-old boy playing catch was struck in the neck by a baseball and died on Thursday.
Eric Lederman was warming up for a game with his traveling baseball team, the Oswego Panthers, in Wheaton, Ill., on Wednesday, when he was having a catch with a teammate. At some point during warmups the ball hit Lederman in the neck, striking his carotid artery and he immediately collapsed.
Lederman was immediately taken to the hospital, where he died on Thursday. The Cook County Medical Examiner listed the time of death at 8:04 p.m., according to reports.
“He was an inspiration to his teammates, coaches and baseball family,” Brian Zacker, the coach of the Panthers said in a statement.
Lederman, a sixth-grader, played for the traveling team for three years and his primary positions were catcher, third base and centerfield.
Zacker remembers a young boy who loved the game.
“He played with an infectious smile and played the game with tremendous passion and heart,” Zacker said.
