RIDGELY, Md. - Due to quick thinking and bravery of 8-year-old Hunter Benton, his family is alive to speak about their home going up in flames early Monday morning.
Hunter fell asleep on their first floor couch while watching a movie when he was wakened by fire.
"It was like a really bad haunted house," said Hunter. "It was all broken and all the wood fell off."
Hunter's mom, Jessica, said once her son woke up both her and her husband, they had just enough time to grab Hunter's 1-year-old brother before the house was completely enveloped in flames.
"He woke us up immediately," Jessica said. "My husband went to get our baby which is in the front room and ran him down the steps and his head was singed but at that point the was completely engulfed."
The Benton family said having their house charred is tough to deal with, but Robert Benton said they are still lucky because material things can be replaced.
"Since we had children we tried to give them all that we can," he said. "It's even sinking into them the real value of material things compared to family and friends."
Robert Benton built the house himself 10 years ago. For him it was tough to watch it burn but he knows it could have been worse.
"We have all of our family, we have all three of our boys so it's really not that bad," he said.
The Benton's are hoping they can one day build a new house on the same lot. Hunter received a certificate of bravery and a medal from the Ridgely Volunteer Fire Department. Hunter said when he grows up he wants to be a firefighter so he can help people.
