MIDDLETOWN, Del.- Delaware State Police are investigating a fiery crash in Middletown that killed a teenager and injured four other people.
Authorities said that shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday, a 2000 Dodge Durango was traveling at a high rate of speed on Summit Bridge Road when for an unknown reason the driver lost control at Bethel Church Road, crossed a concrete median and was struck by a 2009 Chevrolet Suburban. The accident caused the Dodge's engine compartment to catch fire, which engulfed the vehicle.
Police said the Dodge's driver, identified as 19-year-old Markese D. Marshall-Horsey of Middletown, and two passengers in the backseat, identified as 17-year-old Taylor Cribb of Newark and 18-year-old Ryan Duker of Middletown, got out of the vehicle and were treated at Christina Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The front-seat passenger, 17-year-old Andre K. Smith of Middletown, was pulled from the vehicle by a passerby. Police said he was transported by DSP Helicopter Trooper 4 to Christiana Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 46-year-old Shawn Greener of New Castle, was also taken to Christiana Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Summit Bridge Road was closed, with intermittent lane restrictions on Summit Bridge Road at Bethel Church Road for nearly three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
Authorities said preliminary information indicates that all occupants were wearing seatbelts. Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, according to police, who are still investigating.
