SALISBURY, Md.- Khaki pants, skirts and polo shirts. That's what the Wicomico County Board of Education wants most of its elementary school students to start wearing. The board gave the approval for a dress code at its Tuesday afternoon meeting in Salisbury.
Administrators spearheading the Consistent Attire Program said that the dress code is aimed at fixing problems within the schools.
"We are hoping to reduce bullying," said Jason Miller, assistant principal of Prince Street Elementary School. "The consistent attire would consist of a polo shirt no logos unless it was a school mascot or school name on the shirt khaki pants, black pants, navy pants."
Some parents like Coya Dix supported the idea.
"As far as the most pertinent issues of it like does this fit does this have holes in it or did you get it from this store versus that store, that won't matter anymore, because khakis are khakis," Dix said.
Other parents like Jenna Greene said the program will be difficult for families on a tight budget.
"It will be very difficult for me to come up with the attire," Greene told the board as part of public input.
"I'd probably have to start saving now to be able to afford it for two children," she said, "I use hand-me-downs for my youngest, I'm buying two instead of just one and it would take a really big toll on me. I'm looking at spending about $350."
The school board is quick to point out that the dress code has the support of many parents.
Like it or not you can expect the change starting this fall. For now the dress code will be a pilot program.
Toward the end of the next school year, the board will vote to either keep the program or scrap it based on input from teachers and faculty
