SEAFORD, Del.- A group of students at Seaford Senior High School donated money on Friday in order to wear a hooded sweatshirt-- as tribute to Trayvon Martin.
Martin was 17 years old when he was killed in Florida last month.
Around 70 students at the high school tried to wear hooded sweatshirts earlier in the week, following a television segment promoting a hoodie march in schools. However, the Seaford School District's dress code does not allow hoodies.
Desiree Moore, who works at Seaford Senior High School, encouraged the students to go through the proper channels so they could wear hoodies.
"They were very upset at the fact that they couldn't wear the hoodies and we discussed the right way of doing things," Moore said. "People have to realize that these are kids and they have to be taught how to properly voice their opinions, whether you agree with it or not."
The Delaware Career Association at the school filled out paperwork, applying for a hoodie fundraiser. On Friday, students could wear hooded sweatshirts in class, if they donated a dollar to the cause. All proceeds from the fundraiser go to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
School district officials told WBOC this type of fundraiser is far from unusual at the high school,
Some students said it meant a lot to be able to do this.
"Everyone thinks that, it could've been them," Tiara Wyche, a senior, said. "Hoodies are a big part of what people wear now."
