PORTSMOUTH, Va.- An off-duty Coast Guard member and Virginia Beach native provided first aid to a downed F/A-18D Hornet pilot after his plane crashed near Virginia Beach, Friday.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Nick Beane, was at a friend's house at the time of the crash. The jet crashed roughly 200 feet away from where Beane was standing. He quickly ran to nearby buildings that were on fire to see if residents were safe.
As he turned a corner he found the pilot still attached to his parachute. Beane and a brave civilian raced to the injured pilot. Both cut the pilot loose from his parachute and carried the pilot about 100 feet away from the fiery scene. They then moved the pilot behind a dumpster to protect him from the explosions.
Beane stayed with the pilot and provided water and care until paramedics arrived. The paramedics also treated Beane for smoke inhalation before he was released to go home. Commenting on his act of courage, "My training kicked in," Beane said. "I saw the fire and explosion, and I knew I had to help."
