MILLSBORO, Del. -- Delaware State Police have identified the driver killed when his car hit a school bus early Thursday morning in Sussex County.
Police say Michael A. Merchant, 22, of Millsboro, was killed when he failed to stop for the school bus which was stopped to pick up passengers.
Troopers say the bus driver had activated the red flashing lights and stop sign at the time of the accident.
According to State Police, the front of Merchant's car rode the rear of the bus, trapping him in his car. Police say Merchant was wearing a seatbelt. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Indian River School District tells us the bus was headed to Longneck Elementary School in Millsboro. Officials say there were seven students onboard at the time of the accident. Three students were taken to Beebe Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Delaware State Police say their investigation is ongoing in Sussex County
