EASTON, Md. (AP/WBOC)- Maryland school officials say two high school lacrosse players were wrongly suspended for having a penknife and lighter in their lacrosse bags.
The Easton High School students were suspended last year even though they said the items were used to repair their lacrosse sticks. School staff had been searching team members' bags before a bus trip last April, when the boys told the principal about the items.
The Talbot County school board had said the items increased the risk of violence. One player, Graham Dennis, was suspended for 10 days and arrested, though a prosecutor later dropped the charges. His teammate, Casey Edsall, was suspended for one day.
The state school board ordered the students' records wiped clean, saying the county school board did not use proper discretion when ordering the students' suspensions.
