DOVER, Del. (AP) - Advocates for the developmentally disabled in Delaware are concerned about an upcoming appearance at the state fair by the comedian known as "Larry the Cable Guy."
In a letter addressed to Gov. Jack Markell and members of the General Assembly this week, Delaware Developmental Disabilities Council chairwoman Diann Jones said funny man Dan Whitney often makes fun of people with disabilities in bits such as "Donny the Retard."
Jones said the council respects Whitney's free speech rights, but is asking the governor and lawmakers to work with state fair organizers to ensure that his July appearance in Delaware does not include "disturbing and demeaning language" referring to people with disabilities.
