MARYDEL, Del.- Delaware State Police are investigating a Wednesday night crash that claimed the lives of two people near Marydel.
Police said that shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday, a 77-year-old Marydel man was driving a 1994 Volvo station wagon westbound on Westville Road and approaching the intersection with Mahan Corner Road located east of Marydel. Investigators said that after the Volvo stopped at the stop sign to cross over Mahan Corner Road, the driver pulled out in front of a 1999 Dodge 3500 pickup truck being driven by 42-year-old William Otis Elborn of Barclay, Md., who was traveling northbound on Mahan Corner Road. Authorities said the pickup struck the driver's side of the Volvo, causing both vehicles to spin out of control before coming to a stop.
Police said the 77-year-old driver of the Volvo, who was not properly restrained, and his 71-year-old female passenger from Marydel, who was properly restrained, were removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Kent General Hospital in Dover where they were both pronounced dead.
Troopers said William Elborn and his passenger, 13-year-old Lilly Elborn, also of Barclay, who were both properly restrained, were removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Kent General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and later released.
The intersection of Mahan Corner Road and Westville Road was closed for two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
