Tractor-Trailer Overturns, Shuts Down Portion of Route 50 in Talbot County

EASTON, Md.- Easton Volunteer Fire Chief Jamie McNeal tells WBOC that shortly after 7:30 Saturday morning, a tractor-trailer traveling eastbound on Route 50 in Talbot County went off the road and overturned into a ditch near Airport Road. The vehicle was carrying 7,000 gallons of gasoline at the time of the accident.
Chief McNeal says a fire began as a result of the accident and was put out a short time later. As of 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), along with crews from Easton, Cordova, Queen Anne's County and Millsboro were on the scene.
According to Chief McNeal, a pod in the tank of the tractor-trailer ruptured, resulting in 3,200 gallons of gasoline spilling onto the ground.  McNeal says the driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Route 50 has been shut down in both directions from Hiners Lane to Airport Road in Easton as crews work to clean up and clear the scene.
