Salisbury Hostage Situation Ends With Suspect's Surrender

SALISBURY, Md.- The suspect in a hostage situation that occurred at the Parkside Apartments on Emory Court in Salisbury has surrendered to police.
Salisbury police Lt. Rob Kemp said that 31-year-old Walter Leonard Hankerson of Salisbury was taken into custody shortly after 2 p.m., and the 4-year-old hostage, identified as Hankerson's son, was recovered safely.
Kemp said that at around 11:30 a.m., police responded to the Parkside Apartments for a domestic-related assault that had occurred inside an apartment in Building 516. According to Kemp, when officers arrived on the scene, Hankerson refused to come out with his son, who was being held inside the apartment with him.
Police actively negotiated with Hankerson for more than an hour before he surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody. Kemp said the investigation into the incident is ongoing and charges are pending against Hankerson.
Kemp noted that Wicomico County Emergency Management used reverse 9-1-1 to notify Parkside Apartment residents of the incident and advised them to stay inside their homes until the situation was over.
