BALTIMORE- James Troy Durham says he was wrongfully fired from his job four years ago as a Somerset County sheriff's deputy.
On Thursday, a federal jury in Baltimore agreed with the Pocomoke City native. According to his attorney, Howard Hoffman, Durham was awarded $1.1 million in damages in his case against Somerset County Sheriff Bobby Jones.
It was back in 2008 when the then 40-year-old Durham filed a grievance alleging corruption within the Somerset County Sheriff's office. Durham's grievance also accused co-workers of forcing him to change a police report.
Durham, who now says he is employed as a janitor, was awarded $400,000 for loss of pay and benefits, and $700,000 damage to reputation, defamation of character and public humiliation.
Durham stated the last four years of his life have been a nightmare trying to clear his name. After Thursday's verdict he said, "I finally feel vindicated."
