NEW CASTLE, Del.- Delaware State Police have arrested a Dover man accused of pointing a shotgun in the direction of a restaurant employee and several patrons late Wednesday afternoon.
David W. Ducote, 47, is charged with seven counts of aggravated menacing, seven counts of first-degree reckless endangering, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Troopers said Ducote's arrest stemmed from an incident that occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday, when a 44-year-old New Castle man had attempted to intervene in a dispute between two people in the parking lot of the Celtic Crab Restaurant on South DuPont Highway in New Castle. Police said that after the dispute, Ducote- who was one of the people involved- fled from the parking lot in a blue Pontiac Sunfire.
Authorities said that approximately one hour later, Ducote arrived back at the restaurant and began driving around the parking lot. An employee of the restaurant observed the vehicle, and reported it to the 44-year-old New Castle man who is employed by the Celtic Crab. Police said the employee then went out to the parking lot, at which point Ducote stopped his vehicle and proceeded to point a shotgun out of the window toward the employee. According to troopers, Ducote then yelled at the employee before fleeing southbound on U.S. Route 13. Several patrons of the restaurant, including two children, reportedly witnessed the incident.
A bulletin was then broadcast over police radio for Ducote's vehicle. A short time later, an officer from the Smyrna Police Department, with the assistance of the Clayton Police Department, stopped Ducote's vehicle on Brenford Road just west of Smyrna. The officers took Ducote into custody without incident. Officers then located a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun and shotgun ammunition in the car, police said.
Ducote was arrested and charged with driving under the Influence of Alcohol by the Smyrna Police Department. He was then turned over to state troopers and charged with the aforementioned list of crimes. He is being held in the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution for lack of $96,500 secured bail.
