SALISBURY -- This week, Wicomico County may move one step closer to creating a liquor license for entertainment and amusement establishments.
The move, endorsed by the Board of License Commissioners and Pat Scott, owner of Break Time Sports Grill & Pub, could pave the way for national chains such as Dave & Buster's to enter Wicomico County.
While there is already a Class D license, this would allow Break Time and similar establishments to let in people younger than 21 and establish a new category for businesses within Wicomico County.
"The Board determined after reviewing the request that there was a place within the licensing structure of the county for an establishment that provides a certain kind of entertainment for families and minors and was opened neither as a tavern nor as a traditional restaurant," wrote Richard Duvall, attorney for the board of license commissioners, in a letter to the council.
The bill council members will discuss at this week's meeting includes an annual license fee of $4,000, a minimum seating capacity of 140 people, a minimum capital investment of $300,000 and a requirement that more than 50 percent of the business's total floor space be covered by games.
Of the games that must cover a majority of the floor space, the legislation seeks to exclude traditional bar games such as Keno, cards and pinball.
The amusement facility license would differ from the existing Class D license by allowing persons younger than 21 inside until 9 p.m. and by designating the amount of floor space games have to cover.
If the County Council votes in favor of the legislation, members will then ask elected officials who represent Wicomico County in the Maryland General Assembly to introduce it in Annapolis.
