MARDELA SPRINGS, Md. - In a special edition of Meet The Money Givers, we remember the life and legacy a Mardela High School coach has left behind.
"She was just an incredible woman with a passion for kids," said Shannon Webster, a Mardela High School former student and athlete.
Coach Barbara McCool was a force to be reckoned with on the court, but she had a soft spot for children and high hopes for their success.
"She was one of a kind. As someone who played for her, I didn't see it as much then that I do now, everything she had given," said Webster.
Coach McCool took Shannon under her wing when she was in 5th grade. She excelled in both basketball and field hockey at Mardela High School, thanks to McCool's tough love. However, her big heart reached beyond that, especially when it came to those who were less fortunate.
"Buying them tennis shoes, clothes, socks, shampoo, conditioner, soap, going above and beyond and getting them to and from school," said Webster.
Meanwhile McCool was battling cancer, which ultimately led to her passing three years ago. A scholarship has been named in her memory; $500 dollars will be given to one male and female senior at Mardela High, looking to attend college. The student must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, have no suspensions on record, and must have participated in one athletic season.
"We want to make sure that the money that these kids get that are attached to her name, they get the same morals and values she wanted them to have," said Webster.
The deadline to apply for the Barbara McCool scholarship is 1st. For more information on this scholarship contact DEF at 410-219-3336.
