EASTON, Md.- Parents in Talbot County on Tuesday got the chance to find solutions to a growing problem for children in America: bullying. Dr. Susan Swearer from the University of Nebraska spoke to parents about the issues that come along with this growing problem.
Swearer, a psychology professor, has studied bullying for 13 years. She said the thought patterns have to change as a whole with society when it comes to bullying.
"This old idea of kids will be kids isn't OK," she said. "That mean behavior has a detrimental lasting effect."
Emilie Hancharick of Earleville, Md., was invited to the event because she has been a victim of bullying and even started a Facebook group as a project to combat the issue.(https://www.facebook.com/IAmBeautifulAProjectAgainstBullying)
"If we get enough people to become aware I guess we can improve ourselves and our own self confidence to help fight bullying," she said.
Swearer recommends parents become more aware and read more about bullying and help get the word out that it is unacceptable behavior. If you would like to learn more about bullying, go to http://www.facinghistory.org/.
