DENTON, Md. - Some business owners in Caroline County are concerned about their bottom line now that a new Wal-Mart is being built in downtown Denton.
In Denton, it is not hard to find vacant storefronts, and some worry there will be more if small businesses in town do not lower their prices to compete.
"Some of them may go out of business," said Emmitt Pierce. "It's all about competing and whoever has the best deals in town."
"I don't necessarily jump for joy for it to come," said Greg Eigenbrode, owner of Denton Ace Hardware, referring to the new Wal-Mart. "Once they want to get here, you know it's pretty much impossible to stop them."
The walls are up and before you know it, the Wal-Mart will be open for business. Local business owners in town have mixed feelings about the new addition. Some business owners hope the Wal-Mart brings in more traffic.
Eigenbrode has owned the Denton Ace Hardware store for 12 years and feels helpless about the situation.
"I think it can hurt the downtown," said Eigenbrodge. "I am just going to try my best and work with them and bring in the customer service."
On the other hand, Sal Carannante hopes by having a Wal-Mart nearby, it will attract more potential customers.
"I think we are all going to struggle at first for a little bit," said Carrante. "But in the end I think were going to be happy. I am happy with the Wal-Mart."
The Wal-Mart, located of Legion Road, is set to open this fall.
