Woman Charged With Animal Cruelty for Second Time

KENT COUNTY, Del.- It is round two for Delaware woman Mary Carey. The Kent County SPCA this week seized 17 animals from a shed behind a friend's house in Ellendale and arrested Carey for animal cruelty.
It started with a phone call, when someone tipped off the SPCA about animals being kept in a shed on Orchard Road. There, officers found 15 cats and two dogs, in what were described as dire conditions.

"Each of the crates housed either one to two animals and they were all filled with urine and feces," said Maj. Brian Whipple of the Kent County Animal Control. "Every one of the animals were covered in urine and feces. They were not being cared for."
One of the two dogs was paralyzed on the back end, and the other one petrified. Of the 15 cats, all of them had infections. One was urine-stained and one had only one good eye.
"They all have varying stages of different kinds of infections from living in those conditions with urine and feces or upper respiratory infections," said Whipple.

The SPCA must hold the animals until Carey's court dates. For the SPCA that causes a big problem.

"We're housing these 34 animals, which is impacting us in terms of space and resources and care for other animals that need our assistance as well," said SPCA Executive Director Kevin Usilton.

The seized animals cannot be adopted from the SPCA because they are not officially released to it. Also they are being used as evidence.
