Catch 54 Restaurant Rebuilds After Fire

FENWICK ISLAND, Del. - A Sussex County restaurant is rebuilding after a fire last summer.
Crews have completed framing and exterior walls for Catch 54 restaurant near Fenwick Island. Workers concentrated on installing the roof this week.
"As painful as it's been at times, it's been a phenomenal experience," said owner Matthew Haley.
Haley said the new building would offer a similar seating arrangement as its predecessor but include contemporary features meant to save on utility costs.
"Four or five months ago, I was kind of speechless. It was very painful," said Haley. "But seeing how the community has rallied around us recently has made me very grateful and understand why I love living here."
The August fire started in the first floor kitchen and eventually burned through the roof on the second floor, Haley said. Investigators determined heat from a cooking appliance started the flames.
The fire started during the busy dinner hour. Haley credited his staff with helping to safely evacuate hundreds of patrons. No one was injured. Employees were offered jobs at the company's other restaurants.
The project is expected to cost about $1.4 million. The new restaurant is scheduled to open around mid-April.
