Delaware State Police Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in Laurel

LAUREL, Del.- Delaware State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday night in Laurel.
According to DSP, at approximately 10:35 p.m. Friday, a Laurel Police Officer in an unmarked patrol vehicle attempted to stop a Chevrolet Suburban for a traffic violation. They say the driver of the Suburban fled, leading to a police pursuit.
DSP say the driver entered the Hollybrook Apartments and left the roadway, circling an apartment building and traveling along the edge of a storm water retention pond before heading back to the apartment complex entrance, where the officer had positioned his vehicle. DSP say when the driver got back on the road, he drove directly at the officer's vehicle, ramming it head on while the officer was inside.

DSP say the officer then got out of his patrol vehicle and gave the driver verbal commands, at which time the driver reversed and accelerated directly toward the officer. According to DSP, the officer discharged several rounds at the Suburban and the driver continued forward, driving around the officer and into a field. That is where, according to DSP, the Suburban collided with a tree and fence next to Carvel Garden Apartments.
DSP say the driver and a passenger then fled on foot, escaping under a fence into the Carvel Garden Apartments. The passenger was caught following a brief foot pursuit but the driver remains on the loose.

The driver is described as a black male of unknown age, between 5 feet 10 inches and 6 feet tall with a thin to stocky build.

DSP say the Suburban was reported stolen from New Jersey.

Neither the officer nor passenger were injured and it is not believed the driver was shot during the incident.

The officer, who is a ten year veteran of the Laurel Police Department, has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact Sergeant Millard Greer of the State Police Homicide Unit at  302-922-0190 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333
