INDIAN RIVER INLET, Del. (WBOC/AP)- Delaware Gov. Jack Markell and state transportation officials are celebrating the opening of the new Indian River Inlet Bridge to traffic.
U.S. Sen. Tom Carper also was expected to join Markell and other officials Friday in being the first to driver over the new bridge.
The Delaware Department of Transportation announced earlier this month that southbound Route 1 traffic will be routed onto the new bridge starting Friday.
Route 1 northbound traffic also is expected to be moved onto the new bridge shortly.
Once this shift is completed, the traffic pattern will consist of one lane in each direction on southbound side of the new bridge for the remainder of the winter and into spring, when all four lanes are expected to open
