Mayor Ireton Recommends Deputy Chief Rick Hoppes As Fire Chief

SALISBURY, Md. - The mayor of Salisbury makes a recommendation for fire chief, one day after current chief Jeff Simpson announced he's stepped down.
This afternoon, Mayor Jim Ireton announced his choice for the position, Deputy Chief Rick Hoppes. Chief Simpson's last day is January 20th and Hoppes will be the Interim Fire Chief until the position is filled. On the 21st, Ireton will submit his recommendation to the city council.
If the council does not agree with the nomination, the ball will be back in the Mayor's court to come up with another recommendation. "At this point, with the budget coming around, at this point with asking departments to do more with less, there's no person on the planet with more experience doing that in my entire time that I've been mayor, than Chief Hoppes."
Just about a year after being appointed, Simpson submitted a letter of resignation on Monday, citing "life circumstances" as well as "personal and professional" opportunities as his reasons for leaving. Ireton admits he hopes to avoid a long search process to fill the position
