DOVER, Del. (AP) - A judge has ruled for Christina School District officials in a lawsuit involving a Newark High School student who hanged himself after discussing his problems with a school counselor.
The boy's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit, accusing school officials of negligence and failing to notify them of the boy's suicidal thoughts. But the judge said this week that school officials owed no duty to the boy and can't be held liable.
A classmate reported in 2009 that the boy was in trouble and contemplating suicide. The next day, the counselor called the boy into her office, where he acknowledged a previous suicide attempt. After several hours, the boy said he was feeling better and was sent back to class.
But after school, he went home and hanged himself.
