Fire Ruins Mardela Springs Building

MARDELA SPRINGS, Md.- A two-alarm fire broke out just before noon Wednesday at Main and Bridge streets in Mardela. Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control and saved a nearby home.
The vacant building that was once used as a town grocery store and post office is now barely standing. Neighbors in all directions poured out of their houses to find out what was going on.
"I walked out my front door and saw a lot of flames and a lot of back thick smoke coming from the building," said Judy Lucas.
Lucas lives a few doors down from the old grocery store and said it has been vacant for 20 years.
"It's been there for many years. It's been empty for many years and it's unusual that it would just catch on fire," Lucas said.
Onlooker Jimmy Dugan is a former firefighter who just happened to be in nearby when the fire occurred.
"Any fire isn't really a small fire. It's challenging either way you look at it because you never know what you are going to step into," he said.
The owner of the building was not present, but relatives of his tip their caps to the local fire departments for their quick response time. Hebron Fire Chief David Beach said a total of eight fire companies responded to the blaze.
