Delmar woman charged with theft over $10K

A 23-year-old Delaware woman was arrested Friday, Jan. 6, by a Dorchester Sheriff's deputy assigned to a U.S. Marshal's Fugitive Task Force in connection with the theft of antique jewelry and guns which occurred in a Cabin Creek home in October.

A warrant for multiple burglary and theft charges was issued Dec. 1 for Kimberly Jean Shah of 204 North Second St., Apartment 7, Delmar, according to online court records. The warrant was served Jan. 6, along with an outstanding warrant charging disorderly conduct from Worcester County, according to a press release from the Dorchester Sheriff's Office.

A deputy was initially called Nov. 9 to a house on Cabin Creek Road near Hurlock and met with Mr. and Mrs. Jay Wilson Jarrell, who said the home of Mr. Jarrell's late parents had been broken into sometime since Oct. 23.

Overall property damage at the house is estimated at $500. Deputies found entry was gained by damaging a window in an exterior door. Inside, several antique jewelry boxes were found smashed open and emptied.

Using family photos in which jewelry pieces are evident, the Jarrells said that approximately 86 pieces of jewelry were taken, with an estimated value of $18,860, according to charging documents, and antique guns, with an estimated value of $2,250, were missing.

Deputies suggested that the Jarrells visit pawn shops and flea markets in the area to look for pieces of the missing jewelry, because of their familiarity with the missing items.

After searching in pawn shops and flea markets in Salisbury and Delaware, on Nov. 19 the Jarrells contacted the Dorchester Sheriff's Office with news of a familiar item a gold eagle pin that had been given to Mr. Jarrell's father for his service in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II found at the Gold Spot at Bargain Bill's flea market in Laurel, Del., according to charging documents.

Mrs. Jarrell also found a silver ring with a gemstone which was identical to one she had given to her late mother-in-law, deputies said.

The owner of the Gold Spot forfeited four rings, the gold eagle pin, four silver dollars and a $5 U.S. gold coin to the Laurel Police Department, which then returned the items to the Jarrells, according to charging documents.

The shop owner told Dorchester deputies that the items he turned over to the Laurel PD had been sold to him by Kimberly Jean Shah on Oct. 29 for $2,025.60, according to charging documents.

When a Dorchester deputy later went to Shah's home, her mother said she was staying with her boyfriend in Dorchester County.

On Nov. 28 a Dorchester deputy visited the home of Jason Hall, which is located on Cabin Creek Road, just across the street from the house that was burglarized, according to charging documents, and was told that Shah was not there.

Trader told the deputy he had told Shah that the house across the street was vacant, according to charging documents.

Shah was charged with first-degree burglary, third-degree burglary, fourth-degree burglary to commit theft, theft over $10,000 but under $100,000, conducting a theft scheme over $10,000 but less than $100,000 and malicious destruction of property over $500.

Shah was released on $20,000 bond Tuesday, with a preliminary hearing set Feb. 1.

It was a dollar amount to the thief but sentimental value to the victims. I am glad they recovered their items!
