Bill Would Authorize Background Checks in Eastern Shore Counties

SALISBURY, Md.- Senate Bill 41, a bill sponsored by Sen. Richard Colburn, R-37, would authorize four county governments to perform state and national criminal history record checks on both prospective county employees and county volunteers.
According to Colburn's office, seven counties in Maryland already have this authorization. The county would pay for the history checks, and both the prospective employee or volunteer and the county would receive a copy.
Caroline County's government requested the bill, and Talbot, Dorchester and Wicomico counties asked to be added to SB 41. Caroline County representatives say they want to make their workplaces as safe and secure as possible.
Tamara Lee-Brooks, Wicomico County's public information officer, said being able to run national background checks will make their workplace and the community safer.
"Right now if we were doing background checks, it would only be at a state level," Lee-Brooks said. "At a national level, you get more information. It's just that extra cushion to make sure we're doing the responsible thing."
