Somerset County Board of Education Decides Against Merging Two High Schools

WESTOVER, Md. - The Somerset County Board of Education decided to go with "Option 1" of the proposed plans to better the education for the students at Crisfield Academy High School.
One of the controversial options was to merge Crisfield High School with Washington High School in Princess Anne.  The board decided against that proposal at a meeting Tuesday night.  Instead, the Somerset County Board of Education decided to ask the Human Resources Department to determine which teachers are ineffective.  Under the plan, those teachers would be eliminated.
Chairman of the Somerset County Board of Education, Gen. Warner Sumpter says this will be a work in progress but he believes it will work.
"We know we can educate within Somerset County.  We know have the administrators. We definitely have the teachers and we have the parents and community involvement, and with those three things and with those people working together, getting the funding that we need, and re-adjusting, we can improve these scores. We can improve the graduation rate."
Johari Eni of Princess Anne says, "I think that it's a beautiful thing. This community needs some restructuring...the students deserve a different opportunity.
The next step for the restructuring plan is to be sent off to the state for approval.  The Somerset County BOE says they expect this to be completed sometime later in March.
