School Bus Burns When Student Lights Marine Flare

CHESTERTOWN, Md.- Authorities say a school bus caught on fire in Chestertown after a student lit a marine flare.
The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office said at approximately 8:20 a.m. Monday, during transport to Chestertown Middle School, the marine flare ignited. This caused the bus driver and the 28 students on board to evacuate it along Chestertown Road (Route 20) in Chestertown.
Seven students were taken to Chester River Hospital Center where they were treated for minor smoke inhalation and released. The remaining 21 students were evaluated at the scene by Kent County Emergency Medical Services and subsequently transported to Chestertown Middle School.
The school bus is considered to be a total loss with an estimated $45,000 in damages.
The investigation continues into the cause for how the marine flare was ignited
and why the student- a 12-year-old boy- had it on his person.
Maryland State Police are assisting the State Fire Marshal's Office in the investigation.
