Laurel Residents React To Officer-Involved Shooting

LAUREL, Del.- Delaware State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday night in Laurel.
According to DSP, around 10:35 p.m. Friday, a Laurel police officer in an unmarked patrol vehicle attempted to stop a Chevrolet Suburban for a traffic violation. They said the driver of the Suburban took off leading to a police pursuit.
Troopers said the driver entered the Hollybrook Apartments and left the roadway, circling an apartment building and traveling along the edge of a storm water retention pond before heading back to the apartment complex entrance, where the officer had positioned his vehicle. DSP said that when the driver got back on the road, he drove directly at the officer's vehicle, ramming it head on while the officer was inside.

DSP said the officer then got out of his car and gave the driver verbal commands, at which time the driver reversed and accelerated directly toward the officer. According to DSP, the officer discharged several rounds at the Suburban and the driver continued forward, driving around the officer and into a field. That is where, according to DSP, the Suburban crashed into a tree and fence next to Carvel Garden Apartments.
DSP said the Suburban's driver and a passenger then fled on foot, escaping under a fence into the Carvel Garden Apartments. The passenger was caught following a brief foot pursuit but the driver remains on the loose.
On Tuesday, the ordeal was still on the minds of those who live at and around Hollybrook Apartments.
Some residents said that incidents like these are a nuisance and have to stop.
"I was just scared that maybe the shooting bullets would have just went through the windows," said mother of two, Dejanea Tull.
Other neighbors said, they're constantly worried for their safety.
"You've got more kids out here than anybody else around here," Dylan Wilson said . "Counting the playground, you have kids out here 24/7 and you can't do nothing but watch the kids."
Police describe the driver as a black male of unknown age, between 5-foot-10 and 6-foot, with a thin to stocky build.

DSP said the Suburban was reported stolen from New Jersey.

Neither the officer nor the passenger were injured and it is not believed the driver was shot during the incident.

The officer, a 10-year veteran of the Laurel Police Department, has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
Anyone with information related to this incident is asked to contact Sgt. Millard Greer of the State Police Homicide Unit at (302) 922-0190 or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333.
