LEWES, Del. - An elderly man is dead after a van hit a home near Lewes on Monday morning.
Edward Legenski, 81, of Lewes, was driving the van that swerved off Route 9 into the Sussex West development and slammed into a garage, according to Delaware State Police. No one else was in the vehicle, police said. Legenski was pronounced dead at Beebe Medical Center.
Witnesses said the van narrowly missed two homes before colliding with the house on Whitehaven Way. Investigators believe the driver may have had a medical episode that caused the van to veer of the road, said Cpl. Gary Fournier, state police spokesman.
"My husband was in the bathroom and we heard an explosion," said homeowner Gloria Leibbrand. "The house rocked. We went outside and a van went through our house."
Leibbrand said she was in the kitchen at the time of the collision. No one inside was hurt.
"We're grateful because we were getting ready to go out in the car," said Leibbrand. "We would've been injured."
The van damaged the Leibbrand's car, which was parked inside the garage at the time. The garage is likely a complete loss but the couple should be able to return to the home, said development owner Steve Class.
State police investigators took pictures and collected evidence throughout the day.
"It's a sad day for something like this to happen," said neighbor Harry Brooke, whose home was almost hit. "All I can say is thank God no more lives were taken."
State police said they are still working on an official cause of the crash.
