SALISBURY, Md.- Salisbury Mayor James Ireton Jr. announced Monday the resignation of Salisbury Fire Chief Jeffrey Simpson. Deputy Chief Rick Hoppes will assume the role of acting chief, effective Jan. 20.
According to the mayor, in his resignation letter Simpson said, "Life circumstances are such that I am afforded the opportunity to pursue personal and professional interests and I kindly wish to take advantage of those opportunities at this time."
Simpson served as chief since November 2010.
Ireton said that during his tenure, Simpson was able to secure the purchase of three new ambulances to replace three ambulances that were showing significant wear and tear. The chief also focused on developing recognition and training programs for the employees and volunteers in the department, Ireton noted.
This is the second time in less than two years that Hoppes has taken on the role as acting chief. From May 2009 to October 2010, Hoppes served as acting chief before Simpson was named as chief.
