Group kicks off creation with gala

DELMAR -- As a way of introducing itself to the community, the newly created Foundation for Delmar Education is looking to do so by making a big splash.
On Feb. 11, the organization will make its presence known when it hosts its inaugural Delmar Education gala. The event, which is $50 a person, will take place at the Delmar Fire Department.
"We're looking at the Gala as the kickoff of the foundation and we thought it was a great way to start off the organization," said Delmar School Superintendent David Ring. "The board members are set and we have all the things in place to start the nonprofit."
The purpose of the foundation, which will hold its first official meeting after the gala, is to develop resources and increase community awareness for the Delmar School District and Delmar Elementary School in addition to making grants to the school district to support educational programs.
Ring said much research went into deciding how to proceed with creating the foundation, which will be a separate entity from the school board. Ring talked to other boards in the state to gather feedback on how they went about starting their nonprofits.
The gala will feature entertainment, food, a cash bar, raffles and both live and silent auctions.
Stephanie Ring, the superintendent's wife and the event committee chairwoman, said so far half of the 300 tickets for the festivities have been sold. In addition to the ticket sales, several local businesses have also contributed sponsorships to the gala, something she's very appreciative of.
"At this point I've been very satisfied with the enthusiasm from the community," she said. "A lot of the businesses have been very generous with the sponsorships. Although we're doing our best to entertain people we want them to remember that this is for the children and the school system."
