Funded K-12 Education Has Positive Impact on Eastern Shore's Economy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Eastern Shore of Maryland delegation meeting was held Friday in Annapolis. One of the items on the agenda as a report on the economic impact of education on the Eastern Shore.
According to a study conducted by Salisbury University's Business, Economic and Community Outreach Network (BEACON), investing in education is profitable. The purpose of the study was to show the economic and employment impact of the school systems in the nine counties of the Eastern Shore. The study looked at how education improves the quality of life, how education improves the economy of these counties and the school systems in each of the counties.
Dr. Memo Diriker, director of BEACON, was one of many to spearhead the study. He said, "Any increasing expenditure is going to have a very positive return on the investment. For every dollar we invest in education we get $1.90 back."
Due to the economy, the Eastern Shore has suffered when it has come to cutting school budgets. The major point made by Diriker and his colleagues during Friday's meeting was that the BEACON study shows that funding educational services provides a positive economic impact to the Eastern Shore
