FRUITLAND – A 45-year-old Fruitland man was taken into custody by police on Sunday after allegedly starting a fire inside his parent’s home on Gurney Drive, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal.
Thomas Edward McGarvey, 45, has been charged with first- and second-degree arson, second-degree malicious burning and malicious destruction of property.
First-degree arson is the most serious of the charges and a felony which carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison, under Maryland law.

McGarvey is being held on a $250,000 bond at the Wicomico County Detention Center.

Twenty firefighters from Salisbury and Fruitland were dispatched to the house on Gurney Drive around 4:16 p.m., according to authorities.

The blaze, which took 20 minutes to control, caused an estimated $70,000 in damages.
