Firefighters Respond to Hazmat Situation at Perdue Soybean Oil Refinery

SALISBURY, Md.- Authorities say the Perdue AgriBusiness soybean oil refinery on Zion Church Road in Salisbury had to be evacuated Monday afternoon after a pipe containing heating oil in a boiler ruptured.
Perdue spokesperson Julie DeYoung said that after the rupture, an automatic safety system activated and shut down the boiler.
Perdue's on-site hazardous materials response team was called in to assist with the situation. Local fire departments also responded as a precautionary measure, according to DeYoung.
DeYoung said that about a dozen employees who work at the refinery were evacuated as emergency crews handled the situation.
There was no fire and no injuries as a result of the incident, DeYoung said.
