FEDERALSBURG, Md.- Authorities say a 94-year-old man burning trash outside his Federalsburg home lost control of the fire and died from extensive burns he sustained after his clothing caught ablaze.
The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office said that on Monday, Jan. 30, deputies responded to a home on the 4000 block of Preston Road to assist Caroline County paramedics with a burn victim.
When the deputies arrived on the scene, they learned that Herbert Griffin Sr. had been outside of his home burning debris and trash. Investigators said the fire started to get out of Griffin's control and while he was trying to subdue it, his clothing caught on fire and he sustained burns over 90 percent of his body.
Griffin was flown by a Maryland State Police Medivac helicopter to a burn unit in Baltimore where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation was conducted by the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office and Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office.
Griffin's remains have been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Baltimore for an autopsy. No foul play is indicated at this time, police said
