Police Arrest Armed Robbery Suspect After Chase

SALISBURY, Md.- An armed robbery suspect is behind bars after leading police on a car chase on U.S. Route 50. 
The Salisbury Police Department says the recently formed "Rx Task Force" became involved after reports of an armed robbery at Community Pharmacy on South Salisbury Boulevard. 
Police said the robbery happened at approximately 11:27 a.m. Monday.  

Police received reports that a possible suspect had entered a green Ford Aerostar van with Maryland tags. 
Officers with the "Rx Task Force spotted the vehicle near Route 50 and Delaware Avenue.  According to police, a Wicomico County sheriff's Deputy and a city police officer working together in an unmarked car stopped the vehicle on Route 50 in the area of Gateway Street.  Police said that as the officers approached the van, the driver took off at a high rate of speed.  A vehicle pursuit ensued westbound on Route 50 and ended on Route 50 in the area of Old Bradley Road in Mardela Springs. The driver was taken into custody.  

Police said after the arrest, the driver admitted to swallowing a large amount of oxycodone just prior to being placed in custody. The driver was then transported to the emergency room at Peninsula Regional Medical Center. Police have not yet identified the suspect.

Salisbury police were assisted by members of the Maryland State Police-Salisbury Barrack and the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Salisbury Police Department, the "Rx Task Force" was formed in response to the recent spike in armed robberies and burglaries of the area pharmacies.  The task force is comprised of detectives and officers of the Salisbury Police Department, a Maryland State Police trooper and a Wicomico County sheriff's deputy.
